In
November of 2008, George acquired an Apple iPhone (3G). The iPhone
came with a basic 2 megapixel digital camera. After hearing several
people say its just a camera phone, he decided
to see what the camera was really capable of doing. He started Project
Phonetography. It has been his desire to disprove the popular thought
that a larger, or better camera, meant better pictures. Over the
past 16 months, he has accumulated over 4,100 images on the iPhone.
The Project had a few simple rules:
All photographs must originate from the iPhone camera.
False lighting from photo flash units would not be permitted.
All editing must be done on the iPhone with iPhone APPs.
Other than
backing up the phone, the image library must be maintained on the
iPhone.
The printing
of photographs is to be done without any color correction, or other
editing, by a desktop computer or other computer applications (color
correction can be done on the iPhone with an APP).
The best camera
ever, is the camera that is close at hand; the one that is always
with you. The best photo album ever, is the one that you can get
to, quickly. The iPhone has allowed him the freedom of concentrating
on the elements of composition: subject matter, light, shadow, and
color (and even the absence of color). Effects that are normally
created by f stops and film speed are imitated by a mixture of APPs.
After many
years of working with film equipment (which included a large format
Graflex) he has enjoyed the process and experience that is my iPhone.
His camera, editing equipment and his library are with him at all
times.
